Sat, 21 Nov 2009 16:17:39 GMT Taking folic acid supplements before and during the first trimester of pregnancy lowers the risk of neural tube defect in the unborn. Children born to women taking folic acid supplements late in pregnancy are placed at an increased risk of developing asthma, a new study finds. Pregnant women are urged to take a supplemental dose of 400 micrograms of folic acid per day in the month preceding and during their first trimester of pregnancy, in bid to reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects in the unborn. "Our study supports these guidelines, as we found no increased risk of asthma if folic acid supplements were taken in pre- or early pregnancy," said lead researcher Michael Davies. He, however, stressed that expectant moms should avoid high- doses of the supplemental folic acid late in pregnancy. According to the study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, taking supplemental folic acid in late pregnancy increases the risk of asthma in the newborn. Such adverse effects, however, are not reported when the use of the supplements is confined to the early stages of the pregnancy. There is, moreover, no such link between the maternal dietary folate levels and asthma in the newborn. Wed, 11 Mar 2009 13:48:27 GMT Adopting a healthy diet rich in folic acid and other vitamins can promote health and tackle cardiovascular and neurological diseases. While folic acid is believed to have anti-carcinogen properties, a new study shows high doses of the compound promote prostate cancer. Taking adequate amounts of folate supplements can play a critical role in the prevention of several cancers as well as cardiovascular and neurological diseases. According to the study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, folic acid supplements are not beneficial with regard to prostate cancer, indicating that men taking high doses of folic acid are two times more likely to develop this cancer. Aspirin however was reported to have no significant effect on protecting men against prostate cancer. Certain studies had similarly linked taking high doses of folic acid supplements with colon cancer; high doses of beta-carotene was also associated with a higher lung cancer risk in heavy smokers. Scientists concluded that nutritional supplements such as folic acid, multivitamins, selenium, beta-carotene, and vitamins E, C, D, B6 and B12 have no protective benefits against cancer. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. |
